On 16 July, the European Court of Justice issued a landmark ruling which has profound effects for the transfer of personal data globally. This decision invalidated the transatlantic EU/USA Privacy Shield gateway with immediate effect. However, the decision has much wider implications for personal data transfers globally, which may prove to be hugely disruptive.
