In both abolitionist and retentionist countries, many bar associations and professional associations of lawyers have become full players in the abolitionist world –participating in advocacy and awareness campaigns against the death penalty; contributing to ensure access to justice for those sentenced to death and those likely to be; ensuring the training of lawyers who work on death penalty cases; and actively protecting their members when they are threatened because of performing their professional activities on certain issues. The missions that these associations can – and want to - assume are as varied as the challenges they face. What role do their efforts and actions play in the abolitionist fight in 2019? What specific and unique challenges do they face? What perspectives can they offer?
Speakers will include Representatives of Bar associations from Puerto Rico, Japan, Malaysia, Belgium, France, Morocco.
Simultaneous interpretation will be provided (English and French).
