About the 2023 International Fair Trial Day Conference and the Ebru Timtik Award

On June 14, 2023, the 2023 International Fair Trial Day Conference took place as an in-person & online event at the Instituto de Investigaciones Jurídicas at UNAM in Mexico City. Keynote speakers included Judge Ricardo Perez Manrique, President of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (video message); Commissioner Esmeralda Arosemena de Troitiño, Rapporteur on Mexico at the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights; and Margaret Satterthwaite, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers (video message).

Academicians, active representatives of the Mexican civil society, legal professionals, and human rights defenders addressed crucial issues in Mexico, including concerns about the systemic lack of fair trial rights , the interplay between human rights and due process, and the responses to enforced disappearances and summary executions.

Diego García Sayán, Former UN Special Rapporteur on the Independence of judges and lawyers and Former President of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, chaired the ceremony of the 2023 Ebru Timtik Award. The Award was granted to two courageous individuals: Alicia de los Ríos Merino, a lawyer and historian who has dedicated her life to the search for her mother, who was a victim of forced disappearance in the  1970s; and Ana Yeli Pérez Garrido, a feminist lawyer and human rights defender who has represented women, girls and adolescents who have been victims of disappearance, torture, sexual and family violence, attempted feminicide, and feminicide.

As a member of the International Fair Trial Day Steering Committee, the UIA-IROL actively contributed to the preparation of this year’s conference with the invaluable support of the UIA Mexican National Committee and well as its Mexican collective members, including the Ilustre Nacional Colegio de Abogados de México (INCAM), the Asociación Nacional de Abogados de Empresa (ANADE), the Barra Mexicana, the Colegio de Abogados, A.C. (BMA), and the Consejo General de la Abogacía Mexicana (CGAM).
