UIAcademy

The UIAcademy Project, launched in May 2024, is intended to provide our members with a catalogue of short practical training sessions that provide practical skills and techniques, checklists, best practices, guidelines, soft skills, etc. on what to do and what to look out for in specific key areas of interest to all of us, as legal practitioners.

The UIAcademy short courses are virtual  - 1 hour and half  including Q&A, through a special platform provided by LexisNexis, UIA’s Global Premier Sponsor.

The trainings are offered free of charge to members only.

The trainings are held on the 3rd Wednesday of every month, in one of the three UIA communication languages.

INTERNATIONAL DIVORCE : WHAT ARE THE FIRST ISSUES TO  THINK ABOUT AND ASK YOUR CLIENT?
20 November 2024
Daniela Horvitz / Carolina Marín / Davide Piazzioni / Karin Delerue / Tarik Zouhair

Dealing with the defense of international family law cases presents several challenges. Not only in terms of knowledge of international law, but also in the way of ascertaining the client's needs and strategic definitions. To understand these challenges, we will listen to 5 experts in international family law, who will give us some tools acquired through much study and years of experience.

The training session will cover the following points:

  • What do you ask in the first meeting with an international client?
  • How do you deal with a case where the parents and/or the estate are in different jurisdictions?
  • What is the most difficult part of enforcing foreign divorce orders?
  • What does the international client need: legal assistance or counseling?
  • What is the most complicated thing when dealing with an international client?
  • Why do you ask at the first meeting where the passports are?
  • Prenups, yes or not?
  • Questions that the international client does not know how to answer in the first meeting?
  • Free will, yes or not?
