Personalized Medicine: Science, Regulation, Privacy and Intellectual Property
Personalized medicine provides treatment that is specific not to just a disease, but to the genetic and cellular structure of a person. This care may included drugs that work on only a handful of people; genetic modification of a patient, incuding CRISPR technology ; and creating antibodies from a person’s own cells. Being so specific, this type of care raises issues of privacy; of how to conduct clinical trials; of injury to persons unkowingly given ill-suited treatment; and of transnational regulation of narrowly focused drugs.
