Presentation

#UIAValencia

Valencia, which is renowned for its flowers and the Fallas Festival of light and fire, is one of the largest and most vibrant cities in Spain. Valencia is on edge of the Mediterranean Sea and is a quintessential coastal city.
Valencia is home to the City of Arts and Sciences, and hosts major international fairs and events. Valencia was also the scene of El Cid's historic battles.
We have chosen Valencia for our 2015 Congress, as it is a city, which, like our association, is looking towards the future.

We are proud of the multicultural, multilingual nature of the UIA. We are aware that our differences enrich our lives and above all that, combined with respect and tolerance, they make us stronger.
In Valencia, we will discuss the subject of migrations and their political, economic and social repercussions, as, at present, hardly any parts of the world can escape from or ignore this trend.

For us, as lawyers of the world, being attentive to this phenomenon is a necessity, as one day we will all probably have to defend migrants or become migrants ourselves.
We will also study the subject of Sport and Trademark Law.

In keeping with the spirit of our chosen city, we would like this congress to be a celebration that all the members of the extended UIA family can attend.
As is the case each year, the congress is an opportunity to meet up with your friends and to make new connections, as well as to celebrate this profession, which brings us so much.

For those who will accompany you, Valencia is an ideal destination. It has an almost unlimited number of tourist and leisure attractions. With this in mind, we have carefully selected the social activities, including a few surprises, in order to make your stay an unforgettable experience.
For these and many other reasons, I welcome you to our Valencia Congress and extend my warmest greetings to you.

Miguel A. Loinaz Ramos
President of the UIA

When I made the decision in 1987 to become a UIA member at a UIA congress in Barcelona, I never dreamed that 27 years later, I would welcome the UIA congress to Valencia in 2015, in my capacity as Chairman of the Colegio de Abogados de Valencia and Vice Chairman of the Consejo General de la Abogacía Española, where I am also Head of International Relations.

The city of Valencia will ensure that you enjoy your time here and the Colegio de Abogados de Valencia will welcome you as friends and colleagues.

The history of Valencia, as is the case for the oldest European cities, goes back thousands of years.

The city is steeped in history, as can been seen in its historic centre: the Lonja de los Mercaderes, which is a World Heritage Site and was at the origin of alternative dispute resolution methods as well as the Tribunal de las Aguas de la Vega de Valencia, which is the oldest existing judicial institution in Europe which is mentioned in The Poem of the Cid.

At the same time, Valencia is a modern city. The Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias houses a leading opera house and a modern science museum in a “new architecture” complex that opens up the city to the sea.

Valencia also has a Law Society that was founded in 1759, following the approval of an order of Charles III of Spain.

This Law Society is highly committed to upholding the right of defence, which, today more than ever, the legal profession has a duty to advocate for. It is impossible to have a just and fair society without free and independent lawyers.

To this end, bars and lawyers must be the first to defend against injustices and to reaffirm the fundamental role of the profession, in which the UIA also has a role to play.

I look forward to seeing you in Valencia, and I am certain that the congress will enable new generations, who are the future of the legal profession, to take up the challenge I have called “the new profession of lawyer.”

Mariano Durán Lalaguna
President of the Congress
