Call for Applications: 7th International Jacques Leroy Prize – Business and Human Rights

The Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA-International Association of Lawyers) organises the 7th International Jacques Leroy Prize – Business and Human Rights.

 

The UIA encourages law students to participate in this prize rewarding a youngster under 30 for his research about the theme of business and Human Rights.

 

This year, the Jacques Leroy Prize focuses on the impacts of climate change on Human Rights and on the solutions companies offer.

 

Climate change, when viewed in light of social and human development, raises a certain number of issues that involve, among other things, poverty, demographics, health and nutrition, as well as education and jobs, gender equality, and vulnerable populations. 

 

Combating climate change requires a collective effort: although adopting international conventions between States is one part of the solution, companies can also play a positive role by proposing innovative solutions. 

 

While it is essential for companies to commit to combating climate change, it is also necessary for them to ensure that in seeking to resolve climate problems, the rights of communities and workers are not adversely affected. A global vision is therefore necessary. 

 

 

Students who want to participate in the prize must send the UIA 25 rue du Jour, 75001 Paris-France or by mail : uiacentre@uianet.org before July 31, 2016, a written entry (trial argument, dissertation, study or commentary on a practical case, based on a solid legal line of reasoning) based on the theme : « Impacts of climate change on Human Rights : what solutions are the companies offering ? »
