Attacks on the Legal Profession: Past, Present and Future

In his report dated April 2022, the Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers, Diego García Sayán, addressed current trends and patterns of interference in and attacks on the legal profession and explored the multiple forms these interferences and attacks can take across the world, both against lawyers individually and through/against their professional organisations.
Based on this report, as well as on the most recent cases the UIA-IROL has been monitoring, and guided by international and regional relevant standards on freedom and independence of the legal profession, experts will discuss and explore practices and legislation that increasingly undermine, restrict and/or hamper the free and independent exercise of the legal profession across the world, including both a geographical lens and a thematic focus.
